Web Accessibility
Failing to meet WCAG minimums in many industries can result in federal prosecution resulting in fines, or civil lawsuits that can be many times more fincially devastating. To that end I evaluate the following:
- Legible Colour Contrasts.
- Legible font faces, weights, and sizes.
- Properly functioning semi-fluid elastic responsive layout.
- Accessible Semantic Markup.
- Separation of concerns to make speech, braille, and search user-agents work better.
- Graceful degradation where appropriate and possible such as in situations where "JavaScript only" answers are flagrant violations of accessibility and quality UX.
Workplace Accessibility
Your staff is as important as your clients when it comes to accessibility. Workspace ergonomics counts just as much as training and support!
- Evaluate if existing hardware is problematic. Notebook computers are NOT your friend!
- Suggest equipment to minimize long term issues such as carpal tunnel, back and knee problems, neck strain, etc.
- Optimizing computer settings to aleviate eye strain,
Web Efficiency
There are many things that can be done to improve ease of maintennance, overall speed, SEO efficiency, and to eliminate other "hiccups" that could be causing you problems.
- Separation of concerns to optimize caching
- Image size and format choices
- Figure out if any "stack" choices are negatively impacting development, maintennance, or creating "technical debt".
- Determining when and where SPA or other scripting is or is not warranted
- Eliminate reliance upon "framework stupid"
Workplace Efficiency
Just because you think you're a good leader, doesn't mean you're working efficiently.
- Evaluate who is an is not contributing, and more importantly why.
- Suggest restructuring of personnel and their responsibilities.
- Train your staff not to make the mistakes that got them in trouble in the first place.
- Train middle and upper management in proper leadership skills. Here's a tip, two dozen 3 hour "meeetings" a week isn't it.
